Lions Youth of the Year
It is with great pleasure that I acknowledge the outstanding efforts of our Captains: Jaymie Burgess, Lachlan MacDonald, together with our Vice Captains: Nathalia Amato and Martin Bui, as entrants in this public speaking competition. Not only did they have to submit a written application but they were part of a lengthy panel interview process, all before the public speaking section. For this, students had to respond to two unseen topics and speak about these for two minutes each. Responding to impromptu topics is quite a skill in itself and our students are to be commended for their ability to remain calm and measured under pressure.
The last component was the delivery of their five minute prepared speeches. It was genuinely a privilege to be part of the audience and listen to quality, well researched speeches delivered with real passion and integrity. Clearly a great deal of research, drafting and rehearsing had taken place, in addition to their regular Year 12 studies. All students were genuine contenders to win the competition.
There was, however, one winner and that was Lachlan MacDonald, taking out both prizes: Best Speaker and the Youth of the Year Award (Croydon Region). He now progresses to the zone final to be held on Sunday, 26 February. On behalf of the Norwood community we wish Lachlan all the best in the next round of competition.
As a school we are grateful to the Lions Club for providing our students with an opportunity to learn new leadership skills and hone their public speaking skills.
