Eastern Region Football Premiers
Last week witnessed one of our most memorable victories at Eastern Region level with a convincing win against the Sports School, Box Hill Senior. Having won all their lead up games at the Region Round Robin by about ten goals, our experienced opponents would have started favourites. However, our endeavour, determination, running, tackling and team support saw us take a narrow lead at quarter time and increase this in the second quarter.
At half time, Box Hill had not scored, but a strong third term saw them close the gap and we were only five points up at the final break. Knowing that the winner would take home the Premiership Pennant and advance to the State competition, our girls increased their already impressive work rate. With two goals to the injured Carli Forbes playing at full forward and one to forward flanker C J Ting, the final result of 5.9 (39) to 2.2 (14) was thoroughly deserved and decisive. The spirit was sensational all day by the depleted squad of twenty one.
On Friday, 18 August we play the Hume Champion, Wangaratta, at Blackburn at 10.30am, in the State Quarter Final. The victor progresses to the Semi Final at 12.30pm. Congratulations to all families involved. We hope to see many Norwood supporters there.
Among the best players against Box Hill Senior were: Maddie Edwards, Ashleigh Allsopp, Carli Forbes, Jaymee Tough, Caitlin Jackson, Brianna Hipwell, Shae Copley, Tam Pappin, Paris Dewacht, Abbey Tognazzini, Jess Torney, Emma Watt and Montana Cleverley. What a privilege it is, as always, to coach such a team!
